How to create an X (Twitter) account for your business
Creating an X account for your business is a great way to reach new and different audiences to what you might reach on Facebook. It can also help prevent someone from impersonating your business by creating an official presence. On X, it is common to engage in open discussion and the format welcomes it.
Why create an X account for your business?
Creating an X account for your business is a great way to reach new and different audiences to what you might reach on Facebook. It can also help prevent someone from impersonating your business by creating an official presence. On X, it is common to engage in open discussion and the format welcomes it. If you have a niche, X would be particularly useful for you to engage with other people who are interested in your business topic.
How do you create an X account?
Creating an X account is very straightforward. You do not already need to have a personal X account. Begin by heading to https://x.com.
From this page, you want to click "Create account" (the blue button). This will begin the account creation process.
Next fill out all of the requested information. You may choose either a mobile or email to register. We always use an email as it is easier for us but you may choose whichever works better for you. Please ensure that whatever you use is valid as you will be required to validate it.
You just need to follow these steps through and complete any captchas if necessary. You will get to a stage where you're asked to verify your email/phone once you've done, you will have created your account.
A business account
It is important to also tell X that your account is a business account once it is created.
This can be done quite simply by editing your profile, scrolling down to the bottom and selecting "Switch to professional" and following the steps there.
Understanding X's pricing
X is free to use. The free version of X is slightly more limited. You can pay for premium which gives your account a blue checkmark. This means only that the user is paying it does not mean the account is official in any way. Larger businesses may want to pay for the organisation pricing — this is considerably more but will give you a gold checkmark. There is a lot more trust with users on X that they are interacting with an official business if the checkmark is gold. Unfortunately the cost of this gold checkmark often makes it not an option for a lot of smaller businesses.
If you pay for either, your reach on X will be increased. What this means is that more people will see your posts and comments on other posts. X considers paying customers more likely not to be bots and so they are treated to much higher placements. Whether or not you subscribe to either of X's plans is completely up to you. We would recommend testing X out first before deciding to subscribe to either. Here is more information (from screenshots) of both plans taken in August 2024.

How should I post on X?
On X, you can post normally like you might with a Facebook post (there is character limit of 280 on posts for non-premium members). So it might be a good idea to consistently put out posts for your brand/business so if someone visits your page they understand what you do. It is also a good idea to upload your logo, a cover image, a website link and fill in the bio.
The most important thing to do on X is to interact with your target audience. If you have a niche, this is very useful. A vinyl record shop might want to find people who love vinyl records and music. It might be worthwhile commenting on posts from other users who express an interest in this area. For example, someone might post an image of an album by The Smiths, it may be worthwhile for you to respond saying, "The Smiths are an amazing group, I really loved their Meat is Murder album". It is important not to try and upsell and to just engage in more meaningful conversations, the fact that a shop has engaged with them is enough for them to at least check out your profile and visit your website. If you try and upsell, it just looks almost scammy at that point.
In terms of what you post to everyone, you should post a mix of links to your shop/specific products and posts that are just generic comments or observations from your niche. This will make your content engaging and more worthwhile for people to read.
Ultimately you should find what works for you. This is just general guidance and may not work with every business. We would also love to hear what works for you.
